Are Millennials Driving More Sustainable Homes?

Millennials are responsible for driving a lot of new trends and services. As they make up a large proportion of consumers, businesses are constantly looking at ways to cater to their demands. What Millennials look for compared to what the older generation once looked for, is completely different. This is especially true when it comes to buying houses.

Today, there is a large focus on energy-efficient, sustainable housing. So, how have Millennials contributed to this trend and how are homes becoming more sustainable as a result?

Millennials care about the environment

Due to how much knowledge is now available regarding environmental issues, Millennials tend to be much more focused on saving the environment. This has led to a lot of businesses being forced to adopt eco-friendly measures, such as the recent move to ditch single-use plastics.

However, it’s not just businesses which are being forced to adopt new eco-friendly measures because of Millennials. Homeowners and developments are also being forced to be more economical. Millennials look for sustainable homes which have good energy efficiency ratings. So, builders and contractors are starting to construct new buildings in a sustainable manner.

What is a sustainable home?

A sustainable home is one which focuses on eco-friendly features. So, it could be a property built with alternative materials. They could also use renewable energy sources such as solar panels, high-quality insulation and even wind power.

Sustainable homes will also use maximum natural lighting, rather than artificial lighting. So, this means more, or larger windows. There will also be good ventilation inside the property, and if electricity is supplied, it should be provided by a green supplier.

Put simply, sustainable homes are built to be as self-sufficient as possible. They use a lot less heat and power than standard homes and have a minimal impact on the environment.

What are the benefits of sustainable homes?

There are a lot of benefits sustainable homes produce. Not only are they better for the environment, but they also deliver fantastic cost benefits too.

The less fuel is required to heat and power the home, the less money the annual utility pries will be. In terms of the building sector, it’s also cheaper to construct eco-friendly houses as the materials can be sourced locally. If recycled materials are used, it also allows for faster construction times.

When a home is built to be sustainable, it tends to require a lot less maintenance too. So, it’s not just the cost saving benefits, it’s also much less of a hassle to live in a sustainable property.

Overall, Millennials are driving the rise in sustainable housing and that’s definitely not a bad thing. It’s helping to protect the environment, as well as lower living costs. It’s likely the majority of homes will be sustainable within the next decade.
